Welcome to the Ballarat Branch of the ASA Website

The ASA is one of the oldest Avicultural societies in Australia, having formed in 1940. The Ballarat branch, formed in 1958, is the second-oldest branch of the society (after Geelong). Last year we celebrated our 60th anniversary in June!

We welcome new members from those who are interested in birds, their welfare and care, both in captivity and in the wild. The branch caters for all Australian and foreign birds except racing pigeons and poultry. We have members from Ballarat, Sebastopol, Millbrook, Smythes Creek, Gordon, Miners Rest, Avoca, Invermay, Bunninyong, Newstead, Wallace and beyond.

We are here to share our knowledge and learn from each other. It doesn't matter how many birds you have, we just like getting together to talk, have fun and learn.

We are a very relaxed club; we currently have our meetings at 8:00 pm on the 2nd Friday of the month, at the Federation University Rural Training Centre on the corner of Gillies Street and Gregory Street, Wendouree. Visitors are always welcome.

We put out a monthly newsletter full of information to keep our members up to date. The newsletter also contains a list of birds that members have for sale or would like to buy. This service is free for members. You can also view the list on this website.

Each year in August we hold a bird expo at the Ballarat Showgrounds for people to view, buy and sell birds and bird-related items. There is no need to be a member to attend the bird expo or to sell at the bird expo.

We arrange bus trips each year to different places such as bird expos, other clubs and zoos, on day trips and overnight weekends. We quite often go interstate as well, and have recently visited South Australia and Tasmania.

Ballarat is a city located on the Yarrowee River and lower western plains of the Great Dividing Range in the state of Victoria, Australia, approximately 105 kilometres west-north-west of the state capital; Melbourne. With an estimated urban area population of just over 94,000 people, Ballarat is the third most populous urban area in the state.
